Best iPhone Apps for Christmas 2010

We love Christmas here at Tech Towers and we love the iPhone too, so we thought it would be a good idea to write an article about the best iPhone apps for Christmas 2010!

Gift Lists

gift list app screenshotOne of our favourite uses for the iPhone is around organisation and productivity and when it came to sorting out Christmas presents for friends and family this year, we decided we wanted to ditch our excel spreadsheet and find a better way. Guess what? The iTunes app store has a great solution from CleverMatrix Ltd called the Quick Christmas List. It’s super easy to add friends and family, add present ideas and set budgets for each person. As you buy the presents you can tick them off. You can get a view showing what you still need to buy, what you’ve bought, what you’ve wrapped and what you’ve given. We love this app. It’s simple to use, saves time and solves a real problem. Thats why it gets 5 stars from us.

Is It Snowing!?!

OK so this isn’t specifically a Christmas app but we all relate snow too Christmas right? With all the snow here in the UK last year there was a huge buzz around the #uksnow theme on twitter. many, many people on twitter were reporting the amount of snow where they were, giving it a rating out of 10 and adding the first part of their postcode to the tweet. This meant that a map could be built showing where it was snowing using first hand realtime twitter updates. You could even drill down into the tweets to see exactly what people were saying about the weather in their area. A great example of crowd sourced weather that is genuinely useful when your thinking about setting out on a long journey. The uksnow website showing the map is here and there’s also a great little iPhone app. It’s fun, interesting, useful and in my opinion is a look into the future where we will source all manor of information in real time from real people via the web and social media. Perhaps this ones a bit of a gimmick, but its pretty fun. If you are looking for a great weather forecasting app then we recommend Weather Pro available for iPhone and Android. Its better designed than most weather apps and has some fantastic forecast detail including satellite and radar footage.

Advent Calendar

There are quite a few advent calendars available in the app store, most of them new, in preparation for this year’s advent so it’s hard to know which is best. But we like the idea of an iPad advent calendar and we like the look of Advent Calendar 2010: Christmas Quotations available for iPhone and iPad for £0.59. We also like the Hand Drawn Advent Calendar which is free. However we are going to go for Christmas Advent Calendar 2010 – The Best 25 Free Apps from MagicSolver who’s 2009 calendar recommending the best 25 free apps was very popular. So much so that this year they are working on an iPad, Android and web application. They better be quick though as we are only a few days from Advent and no sign of the 2010 calendar in the app store yet!

Over at Appvent Calendar (see what they did there) they will be giving away a free app everyday of advent. These are apps that would usually cost money on the app store, but for one day only during advent they are going to be free. This worked really well last year so hopefully this year there’ll be more great apps in the giveaway calendar.

    Quick Christmas List

Expert RatingConsumer RatingVery well designed. Simple to add friends, family, gift ideas, budgets and keep track of your progress.Would love to be able to reorder lists manually and add details of shops where you need to go/bought from. You can add multiple gifts for each person but this functionality could be easier.

Christmas Advent Calendar 2010: The Best 25 Free Apps

    UK Snow

Expert RatingConsumer RatingKeep track of where its snowing right now and help others by contributing your observations. Crowd sourcing is the future!Unless its snowing it’s not all that useful and the app is not as well designed as many apps on the app store.
